Should the Jets have kept Pennington
Note this blog was written prior to Sundays game.
With Sundays game coming up and the possibility of the winner between the Jets and Dolphins going to the post season, there has been a lot of debate about if the Jets made a mistake in trading for Farve and releasing Pennington.
If you compare the numbers, both QBs are about the same in everything except for INTs. The Dolphins currently have a better record, but that is subject to Sundays final result. If the Jets win, they will have identical records, and the Jets will have a better divison record. That fact, coupled with a Pats loss will send the Jets to the post season, and put a rest to the debate.
However, let’s assume for a moment that either the Jets don’t win, or they do win, but so do the Pats and thus fail to make the post season. The question still is, was going in favor of Farve over Chad a good deal?
My opinion is that YES it was a very good deal, even if they don’t make the playoffs. Here are a few reasons why.
1) The Jets have undoubtedly sold more merchandise than they would with Chad. Economics is a big reason they made the deal in the first place. Extra money never hurts anyone… especially in this economy. ![]()
2) Let’s face it, neither Farve or Chad is the long term answer for this team. If Chad started off with this team and tanked, we would have just had a Chad/Clemens debate half the season. Instead, Farve was able to take this team and develop them, and then pass the torch off to Clemens to run with next season.
3) Finally, Farve brings class to this city. Let’s face it, he is a class act, no matter what else happens in his career. And in a year that has his cross swamp rivals shrouded in controversy and legal troubles, NYC needed someone like Brett around. Hopefully, young athletes like Eli will take notice and follow in his example.
Those are my thoughts. I am happy the Jets went with Brett. Good luck on Sunday.
