Yankees Hot Stove: Pettitte on offer, Sox sign Smoltz, Baldelli

As I previously reported, John Smoltz did in fact sign a contract to pitch for the Red Sox next season.  The Sox also signed 27 year old OF, Rocco Baldelli.  Baldelli was slated as a 5 tool prospect (hit for avg, hit for power, steal bases, great glove and great throwing arm), however he never really lived up to the hype in Tampa Bay.  Rocco was quite often plagued with injuries, including this past season, when he only played 28 games while hitting .263 with 4 HRs and 13 RBIs, after being diagnoised with a Mitochondrial disorder.  Over 5 season, Baldelli was only completely healthy his rookie year.

So here is some Andy Pettitte news; apparently Pettitte was extremely unhappy with the offer the Yankees made him, in light of the money they have given other players on the team including Wang, Teixeira, Burnett, and Sabathia.  Pettitte considered the 1 year $10 million dollar an insult after “all he has done for the organization” (like ratting out your fellow juicing buddy Roger Clemens, also a former Yankee).

However, one of the other teams reportedly interested in Pettitte are the New York Mets.  If the Mets could sign Pettitte to a 1 or 2 year deal, for around the same money as they project to sign Randy Wolf for, I saw go for it.  Obviously Lowe is #1 on their list, but if that doesn’t work out, skip Ollie and go for Andy.  Andy (despite last seasons steroid fiascio), is actually a good player to have in the clubhouse, and great with the media.
