A Rod - The Biggest Mistake in Yankees History
At this point in time, I think that is a fair statement. A Rod’s career in New York has been one big disappointment after another. Here is a guy who is considered to be the best player in the game, and IS the highest paid player in the game, and is constantly the center of controversy, and labeled as the biggest reason the Yankees continue to fail in the post season. Let’s take a look at A Rod’s already storied, 5+ season career with the Yankees.
Let’s start with before A Rod actually was a Yankee. If you remember back, A Rod was in Texas, and was demanding a trade to a contender. Texas also wanted this so they could free up his salary and use the money to get several players so they could possibly contend. A Rod was all set to go to the Red Sox, and in the 11th hour caused the deal to blunder. I forget the actual details, but I know a lot of Red Sox fans were blaming A Rod for the deal falling through. Fast forward, later in the off season, A Rod becomes a Yankee. The controversy starts.
In his first season as a Yankee, A Rod under performed according to A Rod standards. It was the first time in 7 seasons that he didn’t hit 40 HRs. This should have been a clue. He also hit for the second lowest average in those same 7 seasons. The next season A Rod did bounce back, and won the MVP award.
A Rod followed this season up with another sub 40 Homerun season. This was also the season where the booing started in NY. Additionally it was the year that A Rod opted out of his contract during the World Series, and then during the off season signed him during the off season to a 10 year contract, as still the highest paid player in the game. So just to recap, he was already the highest paid player in the game when he opted out of his contract to sign a new deal and still be the highest paid player in the game.
From there it was down hill. Well actually with a slight blip. In 2007 A Rod had his best season ever hitting 54 HR and driving in over 150 runs, and once again winning the MVP. However, last year came the thigh injury, where he missed about 25 games, and had a sub standard season. The Yankees also failed to make the playoffs for the first time in 15 years. Let’s not forget the Madonna drama that happened during the season.
Then, this past off season, there was his divorce, the steroids admission, the Torre book which labels him as A Fraud and claimed he was obsessed with Jeter, and not the Hip injury which could cost him up to 4 months of the season. All this at the price of $25 million dollars a year….. Not worth it. In fact, argueably the biggest mistake in Yankees history. I challenge you to find a bigger mistake in the history of the Yankees.
