Sports Photo of the Day: Maine and Perez to Return Next Week

John Maine and Oliver Perez could return to the Mets rotation as early as next week.  This could be huge if both pitchers can come back in top shape and help the struggling Mets.

Sports Photo of the Day: Johan Santana “I’m A Man!” to Jerry Manuel

This is a great photo of Johan and his rant before handing Jerry Manuel the ball the other night in the game against Philadelphia where he didn’t want to come out.

Sports Photo of the Day: Pierre Change From Lost at Citifield

The actor who plays Pierre Chang from the ABC hit TV show lost was spotted at Citifield.  Pretty cool.

Speaking of Lost, how cool is it that the 5th season is already available on DVD.

Jose Reyes Misses 3rd Straight Game

Published by danielcorvino under Baseball, Mets Edit This

Jose Reyes will be out of the starting lineup today for the third straight game with a sore calf muscle.  In his 3 game absence the Mets have stolen a record 13 bases over a 3 game series, including 7 in the opening game against the SF Giants. The defense however has taken a step back, with Alex Cora being charged with 1 error and at least 2 other plays where an error could have been charged.  Cora is an above average fielder, and is a better option than Castillo at 2nd base defensively, but a far downgrade from Reyes at short stop.  Reyes is expected to be back today.

Mets Place Delgado on the DL

Mets Vs. Phillies Tickets - Buy Now

The New York Mets are down a key man in the heart of their batting order, and Carlos Delgado could be out for a prolonged period of time.

The slugger was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with an impingement of his right hip, and Mets manager Jerry Manuel believes it could be a while before he’s back.

The move is retroactive to May 11, the first baseman’s last game. Delgado left the team before Saturday’s game against the San Francisco Giants and was to be re-evaluated early next week. It’s unclear whether Delgado will opt to have surgery - something Manuel said he will leave up to his star player and doctors to discuss.

Delgado is batting .298 with four homers and 23 RBIs in 26 games. He was batting .423 (11-for-26) over his previous seven games with seven runs scored, three doubles, a homer and seven RBIs. It became apparent in recent days that Delgado would need time to recover.

Mets Deny Big Unit Win No. 299

Published by danielcorvino under Baseball, Mets Edit This

The Big Unit knows his pursuit of 300 wins could take a while if he doesn’t get on track.

Johnson dug himself an early hole against New York and ace Johan Santana, and the potent Mets beat the San Francisco Giants 9-6 on Saturday with another late rally.

Carlos Beltran hit a pair of doubles and drove in three runs, and David Wright had a two-run double and three RBIs for New York. Fill-in cleanup hitter Gary Sheffield added three hits as the Mets won their 11th in 13 games and improved to 12-3 in May.

The Big Unit, looking to become the 24th pitcher to reach the 300-win milestone, is stuck on 298 victories. He heads to familiar territory to try again: Seattle on Friday night. That’s where his career took off in the early 1990s.

Santana (5-2), the NL ERA leader at 0.78 coming in, was far from dominant in a pitching matchup of two southpaws with seven Cy Young awards between them. He allowed a season-high six runs, his four earned runs double his previous 2009 total and raised his ERA to 1.36, and it was only the second time he had allowed 11 hits in his career.

Oliver Perez Heads To DL

Published by danielcorvino under Baseball, Mets Edit This

Oliver Perez will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with patella tendinitis, according to Omar Minaya, who talked with reporters following the game.

“I felt like I could continue to pitch, but I want to get healthy and I want to feel better,” Perez told reporters following tonight’s game.  “It’s a good decision, because I want to be healthy all season long and try to help my team.”

Taking Perez’s spot on the 25-man roster will be Jonathan Niese, who will make his first start of 2009 on Friday.

Niese is 0-2 with a 6.55 ERA in five starts for Triple-A Buffalo this season.
