A Rod Took Steroids In High School

Published by danielcorvino under Baseball, Yankees Edit This

Alex Rodriguez may have been using steroids when he was a highly touted high school player and was suspected of using performance-enhancers while playing for the New York Yankees, according to a soon-to-be-released book.

The Daily News reported in Thursday’s edition that Sports Illustrated writer Selena Roberts’ upcoming book “A-Rod” offers an unflattering portrait of the MVP slugger as a needy personality who wanted his ego stroked constantly.

The paper doesn’t say how it obtained a copy of the Harper Collins book, scheduled to be released on May 12.

A high school teammate of A-Rod’s told Roberts that the future No. 1 draft pick was on steroids as a prep player and his coach knew it - an allegation the coach, Rich Hoffman, denied.

Rodriguez has admitted to using performance-enhancers while with the Texas Rangers but insists he gave up the habit when he was traded to the Yankees in 2004.

Joba Strong Again in Final Spring Outing

Published by danielcorvino under Baseball, Yankees Edit This

080306ny_yankees_logo2022504.jpg

It’s Offical, I’m aboard the Joba Express Train!  This time, Joba Chamberlain stuck around.

Chamberlain pitched into the sixth inning Tuesday, a step forward in his development as a starter, and the New York Yankees took advantage of four Cincinnati errors in a 6-3 victory over the Reds, who played the last few innings without their ejected manager.

The Yankees wanted Chamberlain to pitch six innings for the first time this spring, and he came close. The right-hander allowed five hits and two runs in 5 1-3 innings, leaving after the Reds scored twice.

The Yankees’ fifth starter hadn’t lasted longer than 4 1-3 innings in any of his five previous games this spring, going a total of 14 2-3 innings. It was Chamberlain’s final chance to pitch deeper into a game, and he did what the Yankees wanted, striking out six along the way.  Chamberlain began last season in the bullpen, then moved into the rotation in late May and made 12 starts. He wound up leading all AL rookies in ERA (2.60) and was second with 118 strikeouts.

Yanks win behind Pettitte and Teixeira

Published by danielcorvino under Baseball, Yankees Edit This

Andy Pettitte worked 6 2-3 innings for the Yankees, allowing one run and five hits. The left-hander struck out seven and walked none. Mark Teixeira went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for New York.  It was Edwar Rameriez and not Mariano Rivera who pitched a scoreless 9th for the save.

The Yanks also a key hit from Angel Berroa who drove in 1 run with a pinch hit.  Berroa is competing for a bench spot on the team, and is capable of playing several infield positions, including SS and 3B.

Yankees Win Despite Burnett’s Shakey Outing

Published by danielcorvino under Baseball, Yankees Edit This

080306ny_yankees_logo2022504.jpg

The Yankees won over the Pirates today, but not because of the pitching of their supposed #2 starter, AJ Burnett.  Burnett was horrible today, allowing 7 runs, 6 ER, with 10 hits and 3 BB in only 4 and 1/3 IP.  Burnett was signed to a $95 million dollar multi year contract in the off season.

The Yankees were powered by a HR from Robinson Cano, and RBI hits by Derek Jeter, Heideki Matsui and Nick Swisher.

The Yankees open the season April 6th at Camden Yards against Baltimore.
