Jets Nab Sanchez On Draft Day

Published by danielcorvino under Football, Jets Edit This

Jets Logo

It’s old news now, but the Jets were the big winners at the draft, pulling off a trade with the Cleveland Browns which allowed them to secure Mark Sanchez with the first round pick.  The Jets traded the 17th overall pick, their 2nd round pick, and 3 unneeded players, including Brett Ratliff, for the 5th overall pick in the draft, which they used for Sanchez.

The bottom line of the Jets post-NFL Draft is that they have a much better chance at having a franchise quarterback then they did before it. Now they still whatever minimal potential Kellen Clemens had plus the promise held by USC poster boy Mark Sanchez, the fifth overall pick and the highest selected by the Jets since Joe Namath was nabbed in 1965.

There have been 15 quarterbacks drafted in the top five since 1998. We’re tabling JaMarcus Russell as an unknown (I’m pessimistic, I confess). That leaves 14. Of those, seven have demonstrated that they are guys you could win with, assuming you count Michael Vick who did play in a conference championship game. That’s a coin flip. Plus Clemens could still pop like Drew Brees did after the Chargers drafted Philip Rivers. So the odds are now a little better than two and three that the Jets have the position covered for the next 10 years. That’s a lot better than one in four, at best, they had going in and well worth a second-round draft pick (none of the players the Jets traded wasin long-term plans given this trade).

Sports Photo of the Day: Jets Gameday Host Jenn Sterger

Some of my previous photos of Jenn got flagged for inappropriate for the site.  None of them were “adult” but I guess she was showing a little too much skin to be deemed appropriate for the site.  I completely understand, but I am still a big fan of Jenn, as I know many of you are, so here is a more family friendly photo of Jenn.  Enjoy!

Rex Ryan is the new Jets head coach

Published by danielcorvino under Football, Jets Edit This

About 3 weeks after the Jets fired head coach Eric Mangini, it looks like the Jets have finally signed a new head coach for the 2009 NFL season.  So Jets fans, welcome your new head coach… Rex Ryan.

Many Jets fans and NFL analyists were complaining that the Jets were taking so long in naming a new head coach.  Well, part of the reason for the wait was that Ryan, was still coaching the Ravens through the playoffs.  That ended last night when the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Ravens in the AFC Championship game, by a score of 23 - 14.

Rex Ryan, is the son of former Eagles head coach Buddy Ryan, has been with Baltimore since 1999, working as a defensive assistant during the Ravens’ championship season in 2000. Ryan has spent time as the teams defensive coordinator and most recently as the teams assistant head coach. This will be Ryan’s first job as a head coach.

It will be interesting to see who he keeps on the coaching staff, and who Ryan will bring in.  I will keep you aprised of this situation as it develops.

That’s my 2 cents… I’d love to hear yours!

Eric Mangini Signs 4 year deal with Cleveland Browns

Published by danielcorvino under Jets Edit This

Just over 1 week after the NY Jets decided to fire head coach Eric Mangini, the Cleveland Browns signed him to a 4 year contract.  Mangini is replacing fired Browns head coach, Romeo Crennel.  Crennel and Mangini are long time buddies, and the hiring of Mangini could lead to Crennel staying on as an assistant coach.

The financial details of the contract are not finalized at this time, but the length is rumored to be 4 seasons.  The deal keeps Mangini in the AFC, and could lead to an interesting matchup next year, if the Browns and Jets meet.  I personally would love to see Farve back, and the match be hyped up as a Mangini vs. Farve showdown.

Personally, I am glad to see Mangini land another job so soon.  I was disappointed to see the Jets fire him, and feel he got a raw deal.  It will be nice to see him coaching a young team including future NFL stars such as Brady Quinn, Kellen Winslow, Braylon Edwards, and veterans such as Jamal Lewis and Willie McGinest.  I’m routing for Mangini.

That’s my 2 cents…  I’d love to hear yours!

Shannahan Out… Jets move on to other options

Published by danielcorvino under Giants, Jets Edit This

You will notice that this post contains a Jets and Giants image.  That is because the current front runner for the Jets job, now that my top pick Mike Shannahan is out, appear to be Giants Defensive Coordinator, Steve Spanuolo.  The Jets have 2 in house interviews set up today, but seeing as both of them were on the team that collapsed down the stretch, the management may feel that new blood is needed.  Consider them only backup options at this point.

So Spagnuolo also has interviews set up with Detroit and Cleveland, and is rumored to be talking with Denever soon.

Rex Ryan’s name has been mentioned, but the Jets will need to wait til the Ravens season is over.

Is Mike Martz on ANYBODIES radar?  This guy is an offensive genius.  Look how much offenses like St. Louis and Detroit flourished when he was there, and how much they collapsed when he was gone.

Once again, I would expect an announcement closer to the Super Bowl than now, but at least it will give us something to talk about for a couple weeks.

Pennington Is Comeback Player of the Year

Published by danielcorvino under Jets Edit This

Jets Logo

Well if that isn’t just a cold slap in the groin to all Jets fans.  Let’s be honest, everyone and I mean EVERYONE thought it was a good idea to axe Chad and replace him with Brett Farve.  Hindsight being what it is, I think that almost everyone would say they wished it didn’t happen now.  It’s funny how a change of a team can allow someone to go from goat to hero in the blink of an eye.  We have seen the guy we slammed the door on come back and bite us in the butt, steal a playoff birth from us, and now win Comeback Player of the Year…. cold Chad…. really cold.

He threw for a career-high 3,653 yards with only seven interceptions, directing an offense that totaled just 13 turnovers, an NFL record the Dolphins share with this season’s New York Giants. Pennington also set team records with his completion percentage of 67.4 and quarterback rating of 97.4.  This was the 2nd time Pennington won the Comeback player of the year award.

Meanwhile in Jetsville, we have star Running Back Thomas Jones calling out Brett Farve and putting the blame solely on him for missing the playoffs.  Hey Thomas, what about the poor defensive play of the Jets the last 5 weeks…. That didn’t have anything to do with it?  And all this happening while Brett is complemplating retirement (Again!) and dealing with surgery for a torn bicep muscle.  Talk about Drama…. this is better than Guiding Light! (also filmed in NJ)

So the Season is done for the Jets, Chad’s the man in Miami and Brett is the goat in NY.   Let’s all hope that Farve’s New Years Resolution is to be the comeback player of the year for 2009.
